Getting High Frequency with large format Horns

Hello again,

I have posted a couple threads regarding Large format Mantaray horns. I have now purchased pairs of MR94A's with throats and MRII564's with 1 pairof 901 series drivers. My understanding is the 901 with the large 94's will roll off at a relatively low frequency thus a high freq. tweeter is needed to pick up the slack. I currently have a set of EV T350 horn tweeters and a pair of 511b's with 807 symbiotic diaphrams. So two quick questions, 1. Are the EV tweeters enough to keep up? 2. I now know the 807's are not the greatest for high frequency due to the style of diaphram, would changing diaphrams on the 807's get me enough extension, or would 802's be better to reach the highs or am I crazy! By the way I run a three way active with no CD Horn EQ. I am not picking up the gear till May so I have so time to get the nursery ready.

I don't know about the Mantaray horns with 901 series drivers. But I don't think the EV tweeter is going to help enough. They'll help some with treble but I wouldn't do it. Yes, changing the 807 diaphragm to all aluminum will help your highs a lot; especially if you have CD horn compensation. You say your crossover don't have it but you can make your own easy and cheap. The 802 will give you way better high frequency extension than 806/807. One thing I've learned about Altecs is that they work best as 2 way. It's hard to integrate another (second) tweeter for the highs that the normal setup won't do. Some people say they have went 3 way with Altecs and made it work. But most I've read about and tried myself just don't sound right. Seems to suck the Altec magic out of the picture. Sure it adds crispy highs but leaves something to be desired.

Although they are somewhat hard to find, Altec made a speaker called the MR902-HF. Essentially a 902-8A/B driver on the same manta horn found in the middle of later duplexes. A pair of these just might be the ticket for what you are trying to do.

Yea I heard from my first post that I will ultimatly end up in 2 way heaven. So I am completly open minded as to what path to follow within my budget. I've sold some closet gear on ebay that financed my latest aquisitions with about 200 bucks to spare...So another thought I have is to ditch the 3 way path and take the $200 and buy the aluminum diaphrams for the 291's from GPA. This will apparently will give me better high end response, question is how high with the MR94 or the MRII564. I read some where that with a 288 driver the MR94 will roll off around 15khz and I don't know about the MRII564.

You can likely sell the Symbiotiks in Fleabay for a hundred or so to cover nice crossovers...a newer crossover design with separate HF adjustment is good. Or if you go active many crossovers have a CD horn EQ built in.

I have been running active XO for a few years now and am sold on actives
